Käppele Würzburg

Öffnungszeiten:

The Käppele is open daily at 8am. In the summer, the church closes at 6pm, in the winter at 4pm. On Sundays and holidays, the Käppele is open until the end of evening mass at 6:30pm.

This pilgrimage church sits on the Nikolaus Mountain above the town of Würzburg. The church is an extension that was added onto an already existing, older chapel from 1747 to 1750 based on the design of Balthasar Neumann.

The “Pieta” located in the mercy altar of the chapel is purported to have been the source of miracles and appearances as early as 1650, making it a destination for religious pilgrims. To this day, the faithful flock to the Käppele, especially during Pentecost. The chapel interior is testament to the religiosity of the Würzburg community of the 19th and 20th centuries. There are many offerings deposited in the miracle gallery.

The Käppele is reached on foot by following a picturesque trail that includes 14 separate chapels. The Stations of the Cross were also the idea of Balthasar Neumann and includes life-size sculptures by Peter Wagner.
