The Schweinfurt Art Gallery is dedicated to contemporary art. Since opening its doors in 2009, the art gallery has established itself as one of the central locations of contemporary art in Germany. On 2,200 m², visitors enjoy artistic masterpieces from the 1950s to today.
The ground floor features art considered part of the “Informel” and “Neofiguration” movement. The art pieces were created by the artist groups Quadriga, ZEN 49, junger westen, as well as SPUR, WIR, GEFLECHT, and Kollektiv Herzogstrasse. Artists represented include Willi Baumeister, Georg Meistermann, Karl Otto Götz, Fritz Winter, and Georg Brüning. Other artists include HP Zimmer, Helmut Rieger, Hans Matthäus Bachmayer, and Franz Hintzler. In Germany, the collection is unique in quality and scope.
In the basement, visitors are confronted with geopolitical topics and works under the motto “Individual and Society.” The art tour finishes with landscape and architectural depictions.
The art gallery is housed in a former swimming pool building that was donated to the city by the Schweinfurt business magnate Ernst Sachs in 1933. Thanks to its generous space, it is ideal for housing an art gallery.
The large, 9m tall hall where the pool used to be is used for changing exhibits that have attracted visitors from all over Germany for years.
