The summer palace of the Würzburg prince bishops, built between 1680 and 1682, was enlarged in 1753 by Balthasar Neumann. From 1806 to 1814 the palace was occupied in the summer months by Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany, who resided in Würzburg during this time. The palace has been owned by the Bavarian Crown since 1814 and was also used as a summer palace by the royal family in the 19th century. After the restoration of 1931/32, the castle was opened to the public as a museum. Inside the castle, which was extensively restored between 2001 and 2005, the rooms from the Tuscan period with their rare paper wallpaper are particularly worth seeing, along with stucco work by Antonio Bossi.

The exhibition on the history of the Veitshöchheim Court Garden can also be seen in the palace. There is a very special offer for children in the garden exhibition, namely an audio guide in the form of a radio play with marionettes.
