The construction of the castle was commissioned by Prince Bishop Karl von Schönborn (1729 – 1746) and built by Balthasar Neumann from 1732 to 1745.
During the reign of the Grand Duke Ferdinand von Toskana, the Werneck Castle again served as a summer residence from 1806 to 1814. Just as at the Würzburg Residenz, the duke had the rooms of the Werneck Castle remodeled to reflect the popular taste of the time: The construction “directeur” Nicolas de Salins des Montforts redid the main rooms in the antiquity-loving style of the Toskana period. The most profound changes to the castle came however when the castle was repurposed as a district hospital in 1853. Visitors can tour portions of the castle and the garden.
