Michaelskapelle - Chapel and Boneyard

Michaelskapelle Iphofen

The Gothic Michaelskapelle is the oldest, preserved sacral building in Iphofen. For as long as there was a cemetery at the chapel, it was a boneyard as well. The east wall still has remnants of the original murals from around 1380. The basement of the chapel is home to the only remaining boneyard in Lower Franconia.

The piles of bones are from the late Middle Ages. When cemetery spaces were repurposed for new burials, the bones that were unearthed when digging new graves were deposited in the boneyard as a secondary burial site. To keep with age-old traditions, the small window in the door of the boneyard allows for viewing of the piles of bones.
